Shows, the symphony & sports in this week's 10 About Town

The second weekend in March includes Disney at the symphony, a circus and a brand new events venue.

Thursday, March 8

Oak Ridge Playhouse presents “You can’t take it with you,” a play about a woman who wants nothing more than to host a normal family dinner party, but what happens next is anything but normal. You can catch performances Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are available online.

The Knoxville Theatre Club is performing “The Story Story” an original hero story by locals Sara Gaddis and JP Shuffman. The show runs March 8024th at Modern Studio, 109 West Anderson Ave. in Knoxville. Tickets available online.

Put your dancing shoes on for a lesson in Appalachian square dancing at the Laurel Theater at 1538 Laurel Ave. in Knoxville on Thursday at 8 p.m. It’s $7 at the door, $5 if you’re a member or student of Jubilee Community Arts. You don’t need experience or a partner to participate. You can catch this event every second Thursday of the month through April. For information: 865-522-5851, www.jubileearts.org.

Thursday is International Women’s Day, and you can celebrate achievements of women everywhere at the Knoxville Museum of Art from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be plenty of food and live music.

Pop Art was an art movement in the 60s, but it’s making an appearance in 2018 at the Broadway Studios and Gallery’s POP ART show running now through March 31.

There are a few days left of Anakeesta’s local appreciation days. Residents in Cocke, Hamblen, Jefferson and Sevier counties can visit the attraction for a small donation of $5 to go directly to "Friends of the Smokies." The promotion runs until March 10.

Friday, March 9

The University of Tennessee women’s softball team hosts Missouri for three games this weekend at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. If you can’t make it to the games, which are Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., you can watch them on the SEC Network.

There are back-to-back nights of home games for the Knoxville Ice Bears at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Friday at 7:30 p.m. is Outdoors and Off-Road night which means you can put on your camo and check out an off-road car show before the game, and Saturday’s theme is video games. Tickets available online or at the box office.

Stilt walkers, jugglers, acrobats and more will be at the 7th Annual Circus Extravaganza at Pellissippi Performing Arts Center this weekend. This year’s show, which is themed “Outta Space,” has performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets range from $10 to $12.

Friday is the grand opening for a new event space known as “The Press Room” at 730 North Broadway. You can take a look inside the venue from 4:30 to 5 p.m. at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Dreaming about warmer weather? Head over to the Downtown Knoxville Boat show at the Convention Center to pick out a new boat or daydream about one. Doors open from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children under 10.

Saturday, March 10

Grab a warm biscuit and learn about birds of prey at the “Birds and Biscuits” event at Ijams Nature Center this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $10 per person.

Dollywood is looking for people to join their team for the 2018 season. If you’re interested in working at the theme park, visit Sevier County High School on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a job fair.

Disney magic will come alive Saturday night at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium when the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra performs themes from some of your favorite movies in front of the big screen. Tickets range from $36-$92 for adults and $18.50-$46.50 for children. The performance begins at 8 p.m. www.knoxvillesymphony.com

Sunday, March 11

There are still a few tickets left to see Steven Curtis Chapman perform at the Bijou Theater on Sunday at 7 p.m. You can buy them at the box office or online.

Ijams Nature Center is hosting a “Spring Salamander Search” Family Adventure on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Families will learn how the role that salamanders play in the wild before heading out to the trails to put their knowledge to the test. The fee for this program is $8 per person.
