A new bomb: Package on way to Austin explodes, 1 hurt

The San Antonio, Texas, Fire Department said the blast took place at a distribution center in Schertz, Texas. Authorities think it's linked to four recent Austin, Texas, bombings.

UPDATE 9 AM Tuesday: Federal investigators say a package that exploded at a FedEx facility near San Antonio is believed to be linked to the string of bombings that has terrified the Texas capital this month.

Special Agent Michelle Lee of the FBI in San Antonio says she has no confirmed reports of any injuries in the blast. But the police department in Schertz, where the FedEx facility is located, issued a statement saying one person was treated at the scene and released.

Lee says it is still early in the investigation, but "it would be silly for us not to admit that we suspect it's related" to the four Austin bombings that have killed two people and injured four others since March 2. The latest bombing in Austin injured two men on Sunday.

Lee didn't have details about the size, weight or description of the package.

PREVIOUS STORY: A package bomb went off early Tuesday at a FedEx facility in the San Antonio area, injuring one person.

The San Antonio Texas Fire Department said the bomb went off about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at a FedEx distribution center in Schertz, Texas.

The victim was a FedEx employee who apparently suffered a non-life-threatening "percussion-type" injury from the blast while in the facility's sorting area.

The person was treated and released, according to the Schertz Police Department.

An FBI agent told CBS the box was being mailed from Austin and was headed to Austin. The FBI and ATF were at the scene.

Federal agents say the package is likely linked to attacks by what they believe is a serial bomber in Austin, about 80 miles away.

Four explosions in Austin this month have killed two people and wounded four more. Authorities have said those blasts most likely were connected.

Also on the scene were the San Antonio Police Department SWAT and bomb squads. Those agencies have not yet spoken with a KENS 5 reporter on the scene to provide an update to the public.

KENS 5 received a call from one woman whose husband works at the facility. She told us that he was not being allowed to leave.
