KPD: Driver dies after being found in car with several gunshot wounds

Police found Jerome Diaz Jr., 23, after he crashed his car at the intersection of Ed Shouse Road and Middlebrook Pike. He had been shot several times and was taken to UT Medical Center where he later died.

UPDATE Wednesday, March 21, 2018: Knoxville Police said Wednesday that a man found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after a crash on Middlebrook Pike has died.

Police found Jerome Diaz Jr., 23, after he crashed his car at the intersection of Ed Shouse Road and Middlebrook Pike. He had been shot several times and was taken to UT Medical Center where he later died.

According to the police department, it appears that Diaz was targeted for unknown reasons. At this time, KPD'S Violent Crimes Unit is investigating this incident as a homicide.

ORIGINAL STORY Tuesday, March 20, 2018: One man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting and a crash on Middlebrook Pike Tuesday night, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Officers found a Chevy Malibu headfirst in a ditch at the intersection of Ed Shouse and Middlebrook Pike shortly before 6:15 p.m. The car had several bullet holes down its left side, according to KPD.

Police said the driver had been shot "several times," and was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The driver's name has not been released.

The KPD Violent Crime Unit is investigating the shooting.
