Man with UT football alias faces 14 felony charges

An indictment filed Tuesday found a Sweetwater man tried to extort 12 women and two girls through Snapchat while using the alias of University of Tennessee football player.

An indictment filed Tuesday found a Sweetwater man tried to extort 12 women and two girls through Snapchat while using the alias of University of Tennessee football player.

The Associated Press reports Brandon Douglas Shanahan, 22, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to 14 counts of extortion before a Knoxville federal magistrate judge.

In May, federal authorities charged Shanahan, 22, intent to extort money and other things from a woman through Snapchat while using the name “Camsutton2323.”

The woman believed she was communicating with Cameron Sutton, a senior cornerback who wears the No. 23 at the University of Tennessee. Shanahan already pleaded not guilty to that extortion charge.

After the initial investigation in May, authorities believed Shanahan may have contacted a number of other women.

10News spoke with two teenaged sisters who said Shanahan tried to contact them using multiple Snapchat accounts, including the alias of Sutton.

The indictment filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday shows Shanahan faces 14 felony charges for the alleged crimes from April 2015 to May 2016.

Investigators said Shanahan would threaten to post nude photos of the women, unless they sent him more pictures.

A law enforcement investigation revealed Sutton was a victim of criminal impersonation.

Authorities in a released statement noted that Sutton had not actually conversed with the woman via Snapchat or other means, and was not aware that Shanahan impersonated him.
