UPDATE: The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has identified the man shot at a rest stop on Interstate 40 near Crab Orchard Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Central Time. Deputies were called to the rest area at mile marker 324 eastbound for a report of a man shot in the chest.
Sheriff Casey Cox said 39-year-old Chadwick Ellsworth Barnthouse, of Virginia, had gunshot wounds to the chest and hand. He was taken to UT Medical Center by helicopter.
A portion of I-40 was closed temporarily for the helicopter to land.
While the sheriff's office initially received conflicting witness reports about whether there was a suspect in the shooting, Cox said there was no active shooter at the rest stop, and Barthouse was the only person involved.
He said there is no danger to the public.
