Free flu shot clinics open on Friday

Unfortunately, this year's vaccine hasn't worked as well as expected against some strains. That means you can still get sick even after getting the shot, but the symptoms won't be as bad.

It's still not too late to get a flu shot, as we try to get through this particularly bad flu season, which has already claimed at least nine lives in Tennessee and has closed dozens of schools.

All Tennessee county health departments will be holding free “Flu Shot Friday” clinics from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, February 16, in an effort to get more people vaccinated.

"We are having these clinics to emphasize it’s not too late to get vaccinated because we expect a lot more weeks of seasonal flu that we all know has already been intense. Vaccination is still the best protection we have against this serious and deadly illness,” said Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. “Yes, wash your hands, avoid touching your face, stay home if you are sick but above all get vaccinated. It can help you and those around you stay healthy and if you do get sick, it just might save your life.”

The shots are free, and no appointments are necessary You can find information on your local health department here.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone aged six months and older. Children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk from the flu.

The flu virus is highly contagious, so if you are experiencing any symptoms, you need to stay home and make every effort to avoid contact with others for at least 24 hours after the symptoms have stopped. This includes staying away from work, school and other public places while ill.
