A 7-year-old girl is dead after a fire completely engulfed a house in Crossville.

Cumberland County authorities said the fire began around 8 a.m. on the 4000 block of eastbound Highway 70.

The father of the child said he tried desperately to pull her to safety, but couldn't.

Rescue crews also worked to get into the house to save her. Two deputies were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and one firefighter was injured after he fell through the roof.

The firefighter is still recovering in the hospital, but both of the deputies have been released.

"It's a tragic event for anybody in law enforcement, emergency services. They go out every day to protect people and when we lose a child, especially, that's difficult for us," Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox said. "We hug our kids a little bit closer tonight."

The house was a total loss and investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are working to uncover the cause of the fire. No foul play is suspected.
