Attempted murder suspect shot dead by Hawkins County officers

The TBI is investigating after a man wanted on a felony warrant for attempted murder was shot dead by officers in Hawkins County.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Monday evening in Hawkins County.

According to the TBI, 25-year-old Eugene Loftis was shot and killed by Hawkins County officers responding to a call about a man wanted on felony warrants for attempted murder out of Dickenson County, Va.

According to preliminary information from the TBI, deputies arrived at a mobile home on Okolona Road in Church Hill on reports that Loftis had been spotted there. When they arrived, they found Loftis sitting in a vehicle in the driveway with another person.

When deputies approached the vehicle, the TBI report said Loftis reached for a gun and deputies shot him. Loftis was pronounced dead at the scene and no deputies or other bystanders were hurt.

TBI agents are gathering interviews and evidence as part of an ongoing investigation, and the findings will be shared with the District Attorney General.

The TBI said it does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents.
