Christmas Day fire claims home in Corryton

Crews with Rural/Metro Fire were dispatched to battle a fire that engulfed a house in Corryton.

Fire crews are working to put out a house fire in the Corryton area that started around noon on Christmas.

Jeff Bagwell with the Knox County Rural/Metro Fire Department said crews were dispatched to a fire on East Emory Road just outside Foster Road.

Crews were able to quickly respond because the fire started within two minutes of the nearest station, but water availability was an issue and crews had to shuttle in water from as far away as two miles. Approximately 17 people responded.

The person living inside the home was alerted by a neighbor banging on their door that smoke and flames were coming from the attic through the roof. The resident was unharmed and told investigators he could smell the smoke, but thought it was his neighbor burning brush outside.

Bagwell said the fire appears to be accidental. The home was a near total loss, however, crews were able to salvage Christmas gifts and other items from the home.

Rural/Metro said traffic on East Emory Road will be blocked until around 4 p.m. and that motorists should find other routes.
