Crews quickly work to contain two forest fires burning in Hamblen County

Fire crews continue to work on two fires in Hamblen County. One in Russellville has been contained, another in Morristown is 75 percent contained.

UPDATE, Dec. 14, 5 p.m.: The fire near Morristown that evacuated a neighborhood overnight has been mostly extinguished.

Thirty-two homes near Crockett Ridge were evacuated Wednesday night as the fire raged close by. The residents went to Manley Baptist Church, but were allowed to return home by 4 a.m.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire away from the homes, and there was no damage.

Two firefighters had minor injuries, one due to a fall and the other from some smoke inhalation, but are both expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Another fire near Russellville has continued to burn in a more remote area.

UPDATE, Dec. 14, 8 a.m.: A subdivision has been evacuated as fire crews continue to fight and contain two separate forest fires in Hamblen County

The first fire near Crockett Ridge in Morristown was reported shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. A second fire broke out in a sparsely populated area off Mullins Road and Anderson Bend Road in Russellville around midnight.

Hamblen County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin said the Crockett Ridge fire is 25 to 30 acres in size. At 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, officials said it was 75 percent contained. Jarnagin said no structures have burned.

County and city crews are actively battling the fire in Morristown. Morristown Police Department said two firefighters were taken to the hospital for injures. One suffered smoke inhalation and the other was hurt in a fall.

The East Hamblen County Volunteer Fire Department and state firefighters were dispatched to contain a second fire off Mullins Road. That fire has been fully contained according to Nathan Waters with the Tennessee State Forestry Department.

It grew to about 60 acres, but crews were able to quickly establish a containment line around it early Thursday morning. Crews said they are no longer actively fighting it, but will continue to monitor it to ensure it doesn't spread.

In Morristown, 14 people living in Crockett's Ridge on Leconte Street, Bonneville Drive, Ridgemont Drive, Celeste Avenue and Christmas Drive were evacuated. Jarnagin said the evacuations have been mostly precautionary because of the large number of homes in the subdivision.

He said windy conditions Wednesday night were making it difficult to contain the fire.

Fire command said it will wait until daylight to make in evaluation whether to allow residents to return. In the meantime, the Red Cross has set up a shelter at Manlee Baptist Church for the 14 people that were evacuated.

Evacuee Barbara Hayes said neighbors were helping each other get out safely.

"Our neighbors were out walking the streets and trying to figure out what to do, and we notified each other, and officers notified different people," she said. "We tried to call people and make sure everybody got off the mountain."

Sheriff Jarnagin said the department doesn't know what caused the fires at this moment.
