Update Sunday 3 p.m.:
Authorities announced Sunday that Bryan Glen Winfree, 27, has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash on I-40 eastbound early Saturday morning.

KPD said the Knoxville resident was going the wrong direction on the interstate when he crashed head-on into a semi-truck. Both vehicles then burst into flames.

Winfree was pronounced dead at the scene. The 55-year-old driver of the semi was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

KPD said alcohol may have been a factor in this fatal crash.

A fatal crash on I-40 eastbound near downtown Knoxville caused significant delays Saturday morning.

Witness told police a Jeep was heading the wrong direction on I-40 E when the driver slammed head-on into a semi around 2:15 a.m.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene, but officials aren't releasing the driver's name at this time.

The semi driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at UT Medical Center.

Crews cleared the wreck and opened all lanes of traffic just before 9 a.m.
