East Tennessee Children's Hospital to open Knoxville's first urgent care for kids

Knoxville's first urgent center for kids is aimed at providing medical assistance to children with minor injuries or illnesses after typical pediatrician hours.

Plans are underway to bring the first pediatric urgent care center to Knoxville.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital announced Wednesday it's partnering with TeamHealth to open Children's Hospital Urgent Care at the West Campus location.

The after-hours center will provide care on nights, weekends, and holidays as part of an effort to provide immediate medical attention to children when pediatrician offices are typically closed. The hours are 5 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday, and 2 p.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday. It will service children from birth to age 21 for minor accidents or illnesses.

Dr. Rita Wesbrook will serve as the medical director. She has more than 16 years of experience in pediatric emergency medicine, and has worked in the Children's Hospital Emergency Department for the last 10 years.

The center will officially open on April 16, 2018.
