East Tennessee cities prepare for New Year's Eve celebrations

Like any big downtown event, police and event planners in Gatlinburg and Knoxville are taking safety seriously on New Year's Eve.

On Sunday night, crowds of people will gather in the streets of downtown Gatlinburg to watch the ball drop and see fireworks.

This is the city's 30th New Year's Eve celebration, and event planners are prepared and excited.

"Gatlinburg has always been a favorite holiday destination for our visitors," Marci Claude, a Gatlinburg spokeswoman, said. "They come in by the droves in the week between Christmas and New Year's and ringing in the New Year's in Gatlinburg is just special."

Claude said as always, safety is a top priority.

"We always have extra police officers out during special events and New Year's Eve included," Claude said.

She suggested people dress warm and plan ahead: come early, get a parking space and enjoy the shops and attractions downtown.

At 10 p.m. Sunday, some streets will be blocked off for pedestrian traffic.

"And that's when folks really start coming out," Claude said. "We party and dance and have a good time. It's a very family-friendly event."

Pigeon Forge will have a New Year's Eve celebration at The Island, where there will be fireworks and live music.

Similarly, Market Square in downtown Knoxville will attract hundreds of people to see its own ball drop.

Knoxville Police will have a larger presence, just like any large downtown event. KPD Capt. Don Jones said you'll see officers walking around, on bikes and in their patrol cars.

"Just be aware of your surroundings and what's going on around you is the biggest tip I can give you," Capt. Jones said. "If you see something, talk to one of the officers and have them check it out."

The events in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Knoxville are free.
