Knox Co. BOE approves calendar swap, Lonsdale elementary changes

The calendar change was made because May 1 is the day of the Knox County primary election, and many schools serve as voting sites.

The Knox County Schools Board of Education approved a change to the school calendar and shifting some students from Lonsdale Elementary to another building.

Knox County students will now go to school on Monday, April 2, and will not be in class on Tuesday, May 1, after the Board of Education approved the superintendent's suggested calendar change during their meeting Wednesday night.

April 2 was originally going to be an in-service day for staff. It will now be a regular instruction day, and the in-service day has been moved to May 1.

The change was made because May 1 is the day of the Knox County primary election, and many schools serve as voting sites.

The district released an updated school calendar Wednesday night.

The board also voted 7-2 to make Lonsdale Elementary an intermediate school, and Sam E. Hill Preschool a primary school. Board members Jennifer Owen and Tony Norman voted against the proposal.

Lonsdale has been dealing with overcrowding, and has no room on school grounds to expand. With the change to an intermediate school, the kindergarten and first grade classrooms will now move to Sam E. Hill.
