UT fraternity under temporary suspension

The University of Tennessee is investigating "an allegation of hazing" involving the campus chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, a university spokeswoman said Thursday.

The unspecified allegation against Kappa Tau Chapter emerged in the spring, according to spokeswoman Karen Simsen.

The house will stay open for fall semester, but members cannot hold fraternity activities because the national chapter has suspended it.

Fifteen members live in the house, and there are 99 active members, according to Simsen.

"The case is now with UT’s Student Conduct and Community Standards to investigate and that process is still underway," Simsen told 10News on Thursday.

Leaders at the national chapter of Phi Gamma Delta temporarily suspended the local chapter, also known as Fiji, according to a July 25 notice from Todd Rotgers, director of education.

A notice from the national chapter reads: "A temporary suspension means the following: all aspects of chapter operations should cease immediately, including recruitment, pledge education, intramurals, social functions, etc."

Kappa Tau's house on Fraternity Park opened in 1965. The chapter was chartered in 1890.

The local chapter of Fiji isn't the only fraternity on campus under some kind of punitive action.

Phi Delta Theta is on disciplinary probation through this month, according to UT"s Division of Sorority and Fraternity Life.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is on social probation through this month.

Chi Phi is on social probation through December.

Sigma Chi is on social probation through January.
