(KNOXVILLE) Waste Connections is making a spring trip to Washington, D.C. a lot easier for 17 Knox County elementary school students.

The waste hauler presented a check Friday morning for $2,500 to West View Elementary School, 1714 Mingle Ave. The money will help cover costs for Safety Patrol students to make the annual trek to the nation's capital.

Hundreds of Knox County students head to Washington every year by charter bus. Safety Patrol members ensure students get in and out of school safely.

Personnel with Waste Connections, which picks up garbage and recycling for the city and much of Knox County, also explained what they do Friday morning and educated students on the value of recycling.

The Washington trip for Knox County Schools students is set for June.
