Knoxville City Council approved a $1.22 million contract Tuesday to expand the First Creek Greenway from Fulton High School to the Larry Cox Senior Center.
The new greenway will provide alternate transportation as well as recreation, running along Broadway Shopping Center, Edgewood Park and the North Knoxville Branch Library. The 0.6-mile greenway segment will be built by Wilson Construction Group.
"A component of it as well is to reclaim some of the inner city creeks," Knox Greenways Commissioner Charlie Thomas said. "They're kind of lined back there and neglected when they're actually things of beauty."
It will also provide an educational element to youth using this new greenway system.
"The opportunity for young people to see these inner city creeks, there's wildlife along them. There's blue herrings seen frequenting the creeks." Thomas said. "To have this close at hand to where it's opened up, and young people can actually observe nature this close at hand, it is an educational experience."
The Knox Greenways Commission hopes to eventually see greenways extend from Fountain City to Downtown Knoxville near the Tennessee River.
