Frosty temperatures could pose danger for East Tennessee Seniors

Slower metabolism and less physical activity makes it harder for elderly people to regulate body temperature. According to the CDC, people over 65 should regularly check their homes temperature to prevent possible hypothermia.

As Jack Frost dances across East Tennessee, temperatures will dip into the coldest freeze we've seen this season.

For area seniors and loved ones, it's a time to take action.

"It's important that we check on them because sometimes they just won't turn their heat on because they're afraid their bill is going to be too high,” explained Mobile Meals Manager Judith Pelot.

Slower metabolism and less physical activity makes it harder for elderly people to regulate body temperature. According to the CDC, people over 65 should regularly check their homes temperature to prevent possible hypothermia.

Knoxville's mobile meals assists in check-ins on the elderly when delivering food.

"We're making sure if there's someone who's not doing well then our department steps in and helps,” Pelot said.

Pelot said there's two things people can do to keep their elderly family members safe this time of year.

"If you're out of town and trying to check on someone make sure that one their phone is working.”

When you call make sure to listen: are they talking slow? Disoriented or not engaged in the conversation? Pelot also said you should have a local contact for your loved ones.

“Things happen quickly in the wintertime as far as houses getting really cold and it's important that if you can't get by there, someone is," she explained.

The City of Knoxville's Project Live program is offering space heaters for people in need. They're also encouraging anyone who can make it to the John T. O'Conner Center come out and don't let the bad weather keep you from being social.

"Social interaction is really the key to keeping someone healthy engaged in the lives of others,” said Pelot.
