A Gatlinburg Pittman High School student was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in connection with "threatening" text messages sent to several students in the district.

A "few" GPHS students, one Sevier County High School student, and a Pi Beta Phi Elementary student received anonymous text messages Wednesday evening that "used words that were threatening in nature," Sevier County Schools Assistant Superintendent Debra Cline said.

While Cline said the messages didn't contain any specific details or threats to the schools, the district chose to put heightened security procedures in place.

The name and age of the student taken into custody by Gatlinburg Police has not been released.
