The Greater Knoxville Special Olympics got underway Monday morning at the Hardin Valley Academy. Athletes will take part in numerous track and field events Monday and Tuesday.
Elementary and middle school kids opened the events Monday morning, and adults took the field Monday afternoon. High school athletes will compete Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
“Our athletes love participating in Special Olympics,” coach Lora Williams said. “This is just one super special day of the year when they get to come out and do what they love.”
All the events will be held at the Hardin Valley Academy. Athletes compete in events such as standing and running long jump, 50-meter run, 400-meter walk and softball throw.
Athletes that compete in the Greater Knoxville Special Olympics have gotten the opportunity to compete in state, regional, national and international competitions.
