As the wildfire battle rages on in Cocke County, crews Wednesday afternoon were forced to close part of U.S. Highway 25/70 overnight due to fires in the area.
A TDOT spokesperson said the road reopened Thursday morning but there may be rolling roadblocks throughout the day.
At noon Wednesday, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture said there were 67 active wildfires in the state that have burned more than 17,000 acres.
The Division of Forestry responded to 17 new fires statewide for 170 acres Wednesday, but the total number of active fires was down to 60 Wednesday night.
Crews had the Neddy Mountain Fire 85 percent contained on Wednesday. The fire has burned about 1,116 acres.
Nearby schools are taking extra precautions to keep students safe from the smoky air.
Edgemont Elementary is using different programs to get students moving, despite not being allowed to do outdoor recess. The school's principal also keeps checking in everyday at the wildfire command center to get a briefing.
