Last year, we experienced one of the strongest El Nino’s on record.
The pattern strengthened rapidly, but also weakened sooner than expected. For this reason, the winter of 2015-2016 came to an end very suddenly. Warm and dry weather has prevailed since.
February and June are the only two months this year that recorded above normal rainfall totals, sending our region into the worst drought that we’ve seen in almost a decade.
The forecast for this winter season calls for near to slightly above average snowfall or winter precipitation in general, which would be very good news for the drought situation.
Temperatures are expected to be above average overall, though cold spells are possible.
