Jajuan Latham honored in basketball tournament, proceeds going to scholarship fund

Students at Bearden Middle School remembered their former classmate, Jajuan Latham, in a basketball tournament. All proceeds will go to the Jajuan Latham Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Students at Bearden Middle School participated in a second annual basketball tournament to remember their former classmate Jajuan Latham.

Latham was killed while sitting in his father's car in a suspected gang-related shooting on April 16, 2016. Latham was 12, and a student in sixth grade at Bearden Middle.

All proceeds from the basketball tournament would go to the Jajuan Latham Memorial Scholarship Fund, helping other students in need of financial aid.

"My son, he was a people person," Dalandra Porter, Latham's mother, said. "He was a selfless person, so he really liked helping others more. It would mean a lot to him, and it means a lot to me."

Dozens of students came to the basketball court at Bearden Middle to honor Latham including his family.

"Everybody is keeping his memory alive," Porter said.

More than $2,000 was raised in Saturday's event.
