(WBIR) A jury convicted a man Wednesday for stabbing his mother to death more than 27 years ago in Knoxville.

Jurors found Billy Ray Hill Jr. guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Bobby Lou Hill. In September 1986, Hill was 19 years old when he killed his 45-year-old mother in her Knoxville home while looking for drug money. Hill was originally charged with first-degree murder, but was convicted of the lesser charge.

Family members told 10News many of them had suspected Hill of murdering his mother, but it took the district attorney's office 25 years to charge Hill because they didn't feel there was enough evidence to make an arrest. That all changed in April 2012 when a Knox County grand-jury indicted Hill for stabbing his mother to death.

The trial wrapped up at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. The court hasn't scheduled Hill's sentencing hearing at this time.
