A 14-year-old Karns High School student was hit by an SUV Monday morning while trying to get on a school bus, according to authorities.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. near Ball Road at Hackberry Road in the Karns area.

The teen girl was taken by ambulance to UT Medical Center, Knox County Schools Director of Public Affairs Carly Harrington said.

Eyewitnesses told deputies the school bus had its stop sign deployed as the teen crossed the road and the SUV struck her.

The woman driving the SUV was cited for disregarding the stop sign.

The student's condition has yet to be released, but the Knox County Sheriff's Office said it's believed she sustained head injuries.
