Ken Burns to deliver Civil War lecture at Tennessee Theatre

The documentarian is scheduled to speak April 17.

Award-winning documentarian Ken Burns will speak next month about the Civil War at the Tennessee Theatre.

Lincoln Memorial University's Duncan School of Law and the East Tennessee Historical Society are hosting the 7:15 p.m. April 17 lecture. Tickets go on sale Monday, March 5, and are $55 for general admission, according to LMU's Kate Reagan.

For more than 35 years Burns has chronicled some of the major moments, movements and figures in American history. He's spotlighted the Brooklyn Bridge, baseball, jazz and Jackie Robinson, to name just a handful.

One of his latest multi-part projects focused last year on the Vietnam War. He's previously done a series on the national parks, including Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Burns' talk is titled "Mystic Chords of Memory". He's built a reputation mixing live interviews with old stills and film footage along with gripping narration by people such as David McCullough and Peter Coyote.

Tickets will be available at the Tennessee's box office and online at www.tennesseetheatre.com, according to an announcement Thursday by LMU. Students and members of the Historical Society and Friends of the Knox County Library will get a code for discounted tickets.

Among those contributing for the presentation are Pilot Flying J, KaTom and DeRoyal Industries.

Burns' appearance represents another cultural score for LMU and the society. Last year they brought in presidential scholar Doris Kearns Goodwin.

If you're a Ken Burns fan, you've got plenty to look forward to. Future projects include country music, Lyndon Johnson and Benjamin Franklin.
