UPDATE, FRIDAY APRIL 7: With a lead at the end of the first two rounds and a Final Jeopardy question about British Literature, things were looking good for David Gatewood.
But it wasn’t the night for Gatewood, a PhD candidate in literature at the University of Tennessee. He missed the Final Jeopardy question about the 1908 novel A Room with a View, losing his $10,000 wager and ending his two-day run on the game show.
He still walks away with more than $23,000 in two-day winnings.
Gatewood taped his episodes in Culver City, California in December. He told WBIR 10News earlier this week he enjoyed the experience.
"The people, all the producers and people associated with the show are incredibly nice. It was incredibly fun," Gatewood said. "The pool of contestants you are with are really nice. You'd think they'd be cut-throat, but it turns out to be opposite, we were all enjoying the experience."
You can watch Jeopardy weekdays at 7:30 p.m. on WBIR.
PREVIOUS STORY: A Knoxville man won his first appearance on “Jeopardy” Thursday night. David Gatewood battled back and forth with is opponents, but will be the returning champion on Friday to add to his one-day winnings of $21,600.
Gatewood, who is a PhD candidate in Literature at the University of Tennessee, competed against Maresha Mead, a high school English teacher from Alexandria, Virginia, and Nora Rowaily, a scoring director from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was the returning champion from the night before.
Gatewood struggled early in the first round but made up a lot of ground in the second round when he took advantage of an English category. The contestants battled back and forth for the lead and Gatewood finished just behind the leader going into the Final Jeopardy question.
Gatewood gambled $10,000 in the Final Jeopardy round and the risk paid off as he was able to win after Mead’s wager was not enough to take the lead and Rowaily answered incorrectly.
He began the auditioning process with an online test in January 2015 and then auditioned in Atlanta in June 2015. Finally, he waited until November 2016 before he got the call to be on the show.
Filming for the episode took place in December.
Gatewood will be back as the defending champion on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on WBIR.
