Knoxville retailer loses sales during losing Vols season

Knoxville retailer Hounddogs sells strictly Vols gear. After team losses, the store sees a decline in merchandise sales.

A cold day in Knoxville got a little colder because of the Vols' loss to Kentucky yesterday.

"And yesterday...I don't even wanna talk about it," longtime fan Buzzy Caldwell said.

Another football loss for the Vols Saturday meant sales aren't so hot at Hounddogs off Kingston Pike.

Savannah Mantooth has enjoyed working among all the orange and white for more than a year now.

"Yeah I definitely think that in sales, we've had a big difference than what we had last season," Mantooth said. "Sales are going down with every loss that we take. We are still staying steady, but it's definitely hard."

She says a lot of the time, the whole morale of the store can change with how the team does.

"A lot of them are pretty quiet, say on a Sunday after a loss," Mantooth said. "A lot of them just come in, get what they need and leave."

Caldwell's been one of those longtime customers, and he's definitely a longtime fan.

"I believe the university makes this town myself," Caldwell said. "I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Did that really happen yesterday? Did we lose to Kentucky? We should never lose to Kentucky."

He says Knoxville always bleeds orange—but some Sundays are worse than others.

"I think what the team does affects almost any business around town that's got orange or the volunteer name in it," Caldwell said.

But a loss to Kentucky doesn't mean a loss of spirit for Mantooth.

"I didn't think that we were going to be this bad this season, honestly," Mantooth said. "But I know that it takes a lot for a team to be good, so I think that we gotta work our way up."

She's kept a warm outlook, even if a bad loss makes Sundays a little colder.

Mantooth said she is hopeful with basketball season coming up soon, it will be able to give some relief to these Vols fans who have through a tough football season.
