OCT. 11. UPDATE: The 2016 Yamaha R1 that crashed early Monday, killing the driver and a passenger, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the rear of a westbound tractor-trailer on Interstate 40, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Names of the dead had not been released by police as of Tuesday afternoon. Next of kin were still being notified, according to KPD.

The crash occurred between Gallaher View Road and West Hills. Police were notified at 3:37 a.m. Monday.

Police say the Yamaha's rider and passenger were thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. Neither wore a helmet, according to KPD.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, who has not been named, was not hurt.

Police, the Knoxville Fire Department and Rural/Metro responders went tot he scene.

PREVIOUS STORY: Two people on a motorcycle were killed early Monday in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 in West Knoxville, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Names of the deceased were not released late Monday. The motorcycle's make was not released.

About 3:40 a.m. authorities were alerted of the crash on westbound I-40 near mile marker 337 in the Gallaher View Road area.

"Officers arrived on scene and found both riders of the motorcycle to be deceased," according to a news release from KPD's Sgt. Nate Skellenger.

The tractor-trailer driver, whose name was not released, was unhurt.

Authorities were still working to notify family of the dead before releasing their names.

"The Knoxville Police reconstruction team arrived on scene to work the accident scene. Further information will be available as the investigation continues," according to Skellenger's release.
