Local first responders send help to Hurricane Harvey victims

Several crews from East Tennessee have responded to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. 10News is tracking how our local responders are sending assistance.

First responders across East Tennessee are coordinating efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The aftermath of the category 4 hurricane has left thousands of people in the Houston area under water and out of homes.

10News is compiling a running list of first responders from our area sending crews to help.

  • Remote Area Medical: Volunteers and two truck loads of supplies are already in Houston, providing ready-to-eat meals, medical supplies, and water to evacuees at a large shelter. RAM needs physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, truck drivers, veterinarians, and general support volunteers willing to do heavy lifting. Volunteers who own flat bottom boats or vehicles capable of operation in high-water areas are in high-demand as well.
  • AMR/Rural Metro: 12 firefighters from Knoxville are already at work helping Hurricane Harvey victims. Of those, 9 have already had their mission extended and leave Arlington to head to Houston next. Their return to Knoxville is undetermined.
  • National Guard: Plans to send an aircraft are underway but orders to send them have not been made yet
  • Knoxville Fire: Their crews are ready if requested but they have not sent anyone at this time
  • East Tennessee Red Cross: 7 people have deployed to Baton Rouge. Over the next several days, they expect to send more people and eventually have almost the entire East Tennessee staff in Texas.
  • KUB: Five contract crews with around 20 people total are working out of the Corpus Christi area to provide support in the Gulf Coast. Each crew took a bucket truck, a line truck and a pickup to help restore utilities.
  • Salvation Army's Knoxville Area Command: Sending seven mobile kitchen units capable of feeding up to 1,500 people per day. Division-wide, The Salvation Army will also be sending 23 Salvation Army officers. Knoxville Area Commander Major David Worthy and Sevier County Corps Officer Captain Sarah Birks as well as two employees will depart for Beaumont, TX on Thursday morning in two Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services vehicles.
