Morristown Utility Systems restores FiberNET phone, internet services to customers

Morristown Utility Systems said it has fully restored and stabilized FiberNET for all of its customers after a weekend of spotty outages with phone and internet services.

UPDATE Feb. 25, 10:30 p.m.: Morristown Utility Systems said in a statement on Facebook that all services have been restored for FiberNET customers in Hamblen County as of Sunday night.

The outage started Friday evening as Morristown Utility Systems said its engineers worked to resolve the issue.

On Saturday, engineers said equipment for FiberNET needed to be replaced. Those engineers ordered a part to help restore the outage. On Saturday night, MUS said it had received the equipment and replaced a bad part, but the internet issues had not been resolved.

Sunday afternoon, MUS posted an update asking for some customers and students to go to the Walters State Library as it had Wi-Fi available for those who need to work on class projects. MUS also mentions outside vendors are working on the issue to help restore FiberNET.

MUS apologized to its customers in a statement on Facebook and said if anyone still has issues with the service to contact technical support at (423) 586-4121.

Jody Wigington, general manager at MUS, said engineers are working to determine what the issue may be as replacing one part in the system did not help with the isolated outages. He said figuring out the problem is like a "needle in a haystack" as engineers try to look at what's affecting both phone and internet services.

Wigington also mentioned the issues with phones did not arise until early Sunday. He also said he hates this happened to customers and is hopeful to stabilize the core network, so there will not longer be any isolated issues.

Emergency services appear to be fine at this time, according to multiple people with agencies who rely on FiberNET services.

One Hamblen County dispatcher says he does not believe emergency services have been affected due to this internet and phone service outage.

The Morristown Fire Department's Captain Kyle said there has been no issues with the FiberNET outage. The department cannot put reporting data from calls in its emergency system until after the repair.

The Moore-Murrell Field Airport in Morristown had an automated response saying the number is temporarily unavailable.

An employee at the National Weather Service of Morristown said it was impacted by the outage, but had a back-up plan and were not negatively affected. NWS Morristown was able to send out alerts and communicate as necessary.

10News will continue reaching out to multiple services in the Morristown area to make sure no emergency services were disrupted during this internet and phone service outage.
