Oak Ridge police officers are stepping up traffic enforcement on some of the city's busiest streets.

Operation Drive Safe will focus extra attention on the Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue through Labor Day weekend.

Officers will look for drivers who are speeding, texting while driving, driving under the influence, and committing other traffic related violations.

Oak Ridge city leaders voted to disable the city's speed and red light cameras back in April. A report by the company that operated them shows the number of speeders in school zones jumped more than two hundred percent after the cameras went offline.

City leaders are still trying to come up with another plan to enforce traffic rules in those areas.
