(WBIR, Oak Ridge) - More than 1,000 rowers are in Oak Ridge this week for the U.S. Rowing Club National Championships.

Time trials and heats started Wednesday morning on Melton Hill Lake.

The competition hasn't been held here since 2010, but it is back this year bringing thousands of people to Oak Ridge. Oak Ridge Rowing Association officials said every hotel room in Oak Ridge is full, the restaurants are packed, and this event is bringing lots of money into the city.

"Families come, and we are trying to encourage them to go visit the museums. If they are bringing siblings who want to come and watch someone row, and we invite them to come and go and visit some of the other museums, the children's museum, the science museum. I mean oak ridge is full of wonderful places to visit," said President and Executive Director of the Oak Ridge Rowing Association Terry Holley.

The event is in town until Sunday. It's free and open to the public, and there are plenty of places to watch along the lake.
