Connecting Hearts: a perfect match

Bo Alexander takes good care of Jessie Monsen.

"It's helped me immensely," said Monsen, a Connecting Hearts client. "The people that come are amazing."

Like many others, Bo is a Connecting Hearts volunteer.

Connecting Hearts is a partnership between WBIR, Mobile Meals, CAC Office on Aging and Second Harvest Food Bank.

The partnership offers weekly grocery deliveries and companionship for low-income, homebound seniors in our area.

"You meet a nice person, you become good friends with that person and you look forward to that visit every week," said Bo Alexander, a Connecting Hearts volunteer.

Not long ago, Jessie lost her leg.

Because of her accident, she can't get out of her house to shop for groceries or pick up her prescriptions.

When she gets that knock on her door, she has everything.

Judith Pelot, manager of Knoxville's Mobile Meals, says Connecting Hearts is more than delivering meals.

"They're developing relationships and adding extra support to people who really don't have the opportunity to get out and connect with people," said Pelot.

She adds that many of the Connecting Hearts volunteers are nearing the end of their 6-month commitment and fully intend on sticking around.
