A pastor walking across the country carrying an American Flag made a stop in Knoxville on Friday.

Sixty-eight-year-old Walter "Chick" McGill says God told him to carry the flag across the country and salute each driver he passes to bring a "new birth of freedom and integrity."

McGill is a Vietnam veteran and a Knoxville native. He started in April and has logged more than 900 miles of his 3,200-mile journey.

McGill says he's walking for freedom and respect..

"Everybody says America has lost something. And I think one thing we've lost is respect for one another. We don't have time for each other, families don't have time for each other. So God said set an example for America of respect," he said.

McGill covers about 15 miles a day. He was hoping to finish by the end of the year but says now he might not make it to Santa Monica until next February.
