(WBIR) A day before the official Flag Day, the Corryton community celebrated the red, white and blue with a special ceremony.

The Corryton Senior Center and Rural Metro teamed up to hold a flag dedication and retirement ceremony. The second annual event was in honor of Flag Day on Saturday.

Members of the American Legion performed the flag dedication and retirement ceremonies.

The senior center's director, Greg Hill, said pausing to recognize Flag Day is important.

"The flag is a symbol of our nation, and it's important that we celebrate our nation and the freedoms that we have," said Hill.

The event also included a barbecue lunch and patriotic artwork displays from local artist Alexander Dumas and Corryton Elementary School students.
