Authorities are investigating the cause of a North Knoxville house fire that killed seven puppies.

The Knoxville Fire Department responded to 171 Chickamauga Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a house fire.

There was heavy flames and smoke coming from the front porch area when crews arrived, according to KFD. The sole female resident made it out safely by the time they got there.

Neighbors told officials there was a litter of puppies in the home. Crews found seven of those puppies dead in the rear of the home. They had been overcome by smoke and heat, KFD said.

No other injuries were reported.
