Snow and ice kicks off pothole season

East Tennessee's first widespread snowfall of the year is only the beginning of pothole season.

Few things are as certain as potholes each winter, and though much of East Tennessee is beginning to see its roads start to crumble, Knoxville city leaders say the worst is still around the corner.

"The end of February is where we see potholes ramp up," Knoxville public service director Chad Weth said.

According to news release, the City of Knoxville filled 480 potholes in 2017. So far in 2018, only 20 potholes have been to the city.

However, as temperatures rise, so will pothole patching.

"As long as the asphalt plants are making hot asphalt, we try to run it as often as we can," Weth said.

The city aims to fill potholes within 48 hours, but Weth says when there is snow and ice on the road, that goal isn't always met.

Weth says though city workers monitor road conditions, it's also important for people report problems in their area.

"If people see a pothole, please report it," Weth said. "We have a lot of eyes on the road, but the more the better."

Those in Knoxville city limits can dial 311 to report a pothole to Knoxville's city services. Those without a landline can also call (865) 215-4311.
