TDOT prepares for another round of winter weather

Salt brine is a salt/water mixture used as a pre-treatment for roads before a winter storm or to melt snow on roadways when temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark. Salt is applied to roads once snow has started to accumulate.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says crews have readied snow plows and brine trucks ahead of some more winter weather expected this weekend.

TDOT said it currently has over 229,000 tons of salt and more than 1.6 million gallons of salt brine ready for use.

Interstates and heavily traveled state routes are cleared first. TDOT says they also specify areas vulnerable to freezing including hills, curves, ramps, bridges and interchanges.

With the new year, TDOT got 108 new trucks to hit the roads statewide to tackle winter weather.

There are 205 salt trucks in upper East Tennessee as well as 113 brine trucks.
