Clinton man in critical condition after train crashes into his SUV

THP and other authorities responded to the train accident near Patterson Lane in Anderson County around 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Lake City, Tenn. — UPDATE April 16 | THP has identified the man injured when his SUV was hit by a train.

Benjamin Sharp, 22, of Clinton was crossing the train tracks at Patterson Lane in Lake City Saturday night when his vehicle was hit.

He survived the crash, but was injured and transported to UT Medical Center for treatment. He is in critical condition.

UPDATE April 15 | The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Anderson County Sheriff's Office, EMS and CSX personnel were all at the scene of an accident involving one vehicle and a CSX train Saturday night.

That happened shortly before 5:30 p.m. at Patterson Lane in Lake City, Tenn., according to a spokesperson from CSX.

A THP trooper on the scene said there was only one driver in the vehicle at the time. That person has been transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is in critical condition.

According the spokesperson from CSX, the train was traveling from South Carolina to Kentucky. The train had three locomotives and 110 rail cars. Neither the conductor or engineer were injured in the accident.

According to a spokesperson with THP, the railroad is on a one-way road with a private drive leading up to a few homes. The railroad crossing down not have lights and is equipped with reflective signs and yield signs as well, the spokesperson said.

CSX is working with THP on the investigation of this accident.

THP and other authorities responded to the train accident near Patterson Lane in Anderson County around 7 p.m.

A THP trooper on the scene said there was only one driver in the vehicle at the time. That person has been transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is in critical condition.

The investigating trooper, Aaron McGhee, said the train blew its horn and hit the brakes as the conductor saw the driver was about to cross in front of the train. An investigator with CSX will also be assisting in the investigation.

The train had 110 empty train cars attached to it. There was on engineer and one conductor on the CSX train. Neither were injured. There was no hazmat on the train.
