ID=3176627Tennessee is the fastest improving state in the nation when it comes to reading and math, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which released its annual report card on Thursday.

Tennessee is the only state that made gains in both math and reading in fourth and eighth grades, with a 22-point growth across all subjects. The next closest state in growth was Indiana with 15.

The NAEP is a US Department of Education-sponsored test. 4th and 8th graders in all 50 states have taken the test since 2003. You can see the full report here.

Not only did Tennessee students improve the most; they had the biggest gain in the test's history.

"Let me tell you how significant that growth is. The NAEP has been given for ten years. In the entire ten year period no state ever has shown the gain that Tennessee made this year," said Gov. Haslam.

In overall national ranking, Tennessee went from 46th in the nation in math to 37th, and 41st to 31st in reading.
