The Big Orange is now a little more green! Volunteers planted 850 trees Friday along Second Creek in honor of Tennessee Arbor Day.

The "Make Orange Green" initiative and facilities services organized the event. Organizers say the area has been a little neglected since the World's Fair and was in need of a facelift.

It's not just planting trees but it's creating a better environment for wildlife and for all the species that live amongst the trees,” said David Vandergriff, from UT Extension.

All the trees planted Friday are native to the region. They came from the Department of Agriculture's State Seedling Nursery.

Tennessee Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday in March. National Arbor Day is April 24, but many states celebrate early due to the best time to plant trees in the area.
