Police in one East Tennessee county are looking for the person or people who may have accidentally damaged dozens of historic headstones.

The New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery is located in Surgoinsville, in Hawkins County. Earlier this month, caretakers noticed that someone had used some sort of abrasive device on up to 70 of the tombstones. Some of those grave markers date back to the 1700's, others mark the final resting place of Civil War veterans.

Authorities think the vandalism may have been unintentional, that perhaps the person thought they were helping by making the names more visible.

There is a $1,000 dollar reward from the local cemetery committee for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects, however, local police aren't sure if the people responsible would be charged if their intentions were with malice.

If you have any information, contact Surgoinsville Chief of Police James Hammonds at (423) 345-4775.
