Veterans to take virtual HonorAir trip to see monuments built in their honor

The virtual flight's organizers are asking the public to help provide one of the actual flight's most special moments.

HonorAir Knoxville will help a group of veterans experience Washington, D.C. this weekend without leaving East Tennessee.

The group will offer a new virtual flight for veterans who cannot make the journey to the nation's capital to see the memorials built to commemorate their service.

32 veterans have signed up for the virtual flight Saturday.

Organizers are asking for the public's help in making sure the veterans get to experience one of the special moments of every HonorAir trip - the welcome home.

HonorAir flights typically concur with applause, handshakes and smiles- as seen at McGhee Tyson airport when actual flights return.

The organization has asked people to come to Bridgewater Event Center in West Knoxville at 11 a.m. to provide this experience.

10News' own Leslie Ackerson and Robin Wilhoit are among the volunteers helping escort those veterans on their virtual flight.

HonorAir Knoxville has flown more than 3,000 veterans, including veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
