LEE COUNTY, Va. (WCYB) - A newborn infant has died after she was mauled by a dog in southwest Virginia on Wednesday.
Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said the little girl was just 8-days-old when the family dog reportedly attacked the baby in her bassinet in the home Wednesday mid-morning.
The dog involved in the mauling has been euthanized after being seized by animal control, according to Parsons. He said the dog was a wolf-mix canine.
The parents of the child and owner of the dog signed a waiver that allowed for the dog to be put down, according to Parsons.
The home is located in the Seminary community located 7 miles from the Wise County, Virginia, border.
A family member took the child to a medical facility in Big Stone Gap after the attack. She was then flown by helicopter to UT Medical Center in Knoxville where she passed away just after 4 p.m. from injuries sustained to her upper body.
County social services continue to investigate, Parsons said.
