Cargo fire jams up I-40 West in Midway for hours

A tractor-trailer's cargo unit caught fire on I-40 West at Midway Road Monday, blocking the right lanes of the interstate into Tuesday morning.

A tractor-trailer's cargo caught fire Monday, jamming up traffic on Westbound Interstate 40 at Midway Road east of Strawberry Plains Pike for hours.

Around 7:30 p.m., the Knoxville Fire Department responded to a trailer fully engulfed in flames.

No one was hurt in the incident. Crews worked for two hours to extinguish the fire and reopen westbound lanes to traffic.

In order to keep the fire from damaging his rig, the driver was able to disconnect from the burning trailer, which appeared to be carrying chilled grocery goods such as various brands of almond milk.

Fire crews sift through the wreckage of the burnt cargo trailer to extinguish remaining hot spots.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation estimated the charred wreckage would be cleared from the right lane of the interstate around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
