ID=9952367A section of McKamey Road is now closed as crews continue the Western Avenue widening project.

Monday morning, workers closed McKamey from Western Avenue to Ball Camp Pike. The closure is expected to last 4-6 weeks. During that time, the roadway will be completely reconstructed.

Luckily for local residents, the section of Ball Camp Pike that has been closed for sewer construction reopened this weekend, so drivers have an alternate route. Drivers can also take Goldenrod Circle, and John May Road to get around the closure.

Update: According to TDOT's website, the closure of McKamey Road has been delayed.

The road was scheduled to close for several weeks starting on September 2, as part of the continuing work to widen Western Avenue. Now, that closure of McKamey Road has been delayed by at least two weeks.

Matlock Road will close as scheduled on September 2, for at least a week.

Previous story

The ongoing work on Western Avenue in northwest Knoxville will close two more secondary roads next week.

For more than three years, TDOT has been working to widen the highway from two to four lanes on an almost four mile stretch from Copper Kettle to Schaad Road.

Next week, starting at 9 am on Tuesday morning, September 2, TDOT will close McKamey Road from Western to Ball Camp, and Matlock Road at Ball Camp for construction work.

McKamey is expected to be closed for four to six weeks. Matlock should reopen in a couple of weeks.

All drivers will need to take alternate routes, which could include Goldenrod Circle and John May Road. TDOT's website says the contractor is working to temporarily re-open access to Western Avenue from Ball Camp Pike to help with traffic flow.

The project is expected to be finished in April of 2015.
