The biggest rival Pat Summitt ever had during her coaching career and many of that coach’s players have joined the long list of those offering thoughts and prayers to Tennessee’s legendary coach and her family.

Summitt, 64, revealed in August 2011 that she’d been diagnosed earlier that summer with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, and she finished the 2011-12 season on the bench before stepping down and serving as head coach emeritus.

It’s been no secret inside the Tennessee athletic department for at least a couple of months that Summitt’s disease was rapidly progressing, though, and a family spokesperson confirmed that over the weekend.

Several of Summitt’s family, closest friends and former players have convened in Knoxville the past few days, and they have been prepared for the worst-case scenario.
