Fans chant 'Fire Currie' at Tennessee basketball game

Fans voiced their displeasure with Tennessee athletics director John Currie at the Vols basketball game on Wednesday night.

Fans voiced their displeasure with Tennessee athletics director John Currie during the Vols basketball game on Wednesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The student section broke into chants of "Fire Currie" multiple times throughout the game.

The band started to play during the chants at times.

Tennessee beat Mercer, 84-60.

Students also chanted, "Hire Tee" and "We want Kiffin," in reference to former Vols national championship quarterback and current USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin and former Vols head coach, Lane Kiffin, now at Florida Atlantic.

Many fans have been displeased, at the very least, with Currie since Tennessee attempted to hire Ohio State offensive coordinator Greg Schiano on Sunday.

Currie and Schiano had signed a Memorandum of Understanding before Tennessee backed out of the deal because of public outcry and disapproval from former players, boosters and lawmakers. Many didn't like that Schiano coached at Penn State during the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal.

Schiano served as an assistant and defensive backs coach at Penn State in the early 1990s. He worked under then defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Sandusky was convicted in 2011 of multiple counts of sexual abuse of young boys.

Anthony Lurano, a trustee at Penn State, said that Schiano being involved in the Jerry Sandusky case is untrue.

Wednesday, a source very close to Tennessee's coaching search process told WBIR that Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm was interviewed by Tennessee but was never offered a contract.
