East Tennessee teacher finds passion for MMA fighting

Her journey has taken her to heights she never imagined.

Olivia Parker teaches American Literature at Heritage High School and is a mom to two boys, but she isn't your ordinary mom or teacher, She's an MMA fighter.

"My husband bought me a Wonder Woman tank top and I had fallen asleep in it," said the mom of two. "And the kids came in the next morning and crawled into the bed, and I'm kind of laying there half asleep because I don't want to get out of bed. They pull the covers back and said, 'I knew it, she's Wonder Woman!'. My children to this day think that I'm Wonder Woman."

If you knew the journey she took to get to where she's at, you'd probably think so too. After having children, Olivia found herself feeling unhealthy and overweight, so she set out to change that.

"At first it was just kickboxing so I did that for about six months, lost about 60 pounds and my strength and conditioning coach pulled this whole, 'you should fight Olivia, you punch really hard'. I was like, no I'm a 32-year-old mother and a teacher. I'm very happy in my life I just want to lose weight."

Well, that didn't last. After her first fight, she was hooked.

"I cannot describe the adrenaline that comes with that," Olivia said.

It's been a couple years since her first fight, and Olivia remains undefeated. Her journey has taken her to heights she never imagined.

"Part of me felt like when I got married and had kids, that was it. You give that part of yourself up and I became the mother and the wife. One of the things I've learned here is that I can do anything."

"If there ever was a real life super hero, to me that's what she is because she's able to handle so many things outside of family, but she's still the best wife and the best mother that anybody can ask for," her husband Philip said.

Although Olivia and Philip don't allow their sons Cameron and Kyden to watch her fights, they too want to follow in their mom's footsteps and even train at the same gym. Knoxville Martial Arts Academy.

"I want my kids to see me struggle, I want my kids to see me succeed. I want them understand what hard work is and I want my students to do the same thing."
